Sunscreens have been in the market since the world was made, okay a bit of exaggeration there but sunscreens have been a boon to society since the early ages when greeks used olive oil as a sun protection. Egyptians used Rice & Jasmine Plant extracts. Synthetic Sunscreens today have also been quite in for a few thousand years. The biggest hit at that time was a sunscreen with SPF 2. (Whoa!) We’ve come a long way haven’t we? In the last decades alone we have come up with Broad Spectrums, Water Resistant etc.
So coming back to understanding the power of your sunscreen. Lets start with the most common 3 most used words “SPF” which stands for Sun protection Factor. We all talk about how important it is and now moisturisers and foundations also have SPF in it. but what does it do and what are all the numbers SPF15, SPF30, SPF50 and so on mean?
We have 2 important Ultraviolet rays that come in contact with our skin that is the UVA and the UVB. SPF means the protection we receive from UVA. So mathematically speaking SPF 1 is equals to 15 mins of protection. which means SPF 15 would be 225mins of protection. SPF 30 is equals to 450mins of protection.
